Jan-Erik GUSTAFSSON (cello) performs internationally both as a soloist and chamber musician and, since 1996, has been Artistic Director of the Loviisa Sibelius Festival in Finland. His passion for educating the next generation of musicians is evident both through his work at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki where he teaches and through the regular masterclasses he gives world-wide. Jan-Erik has made several recordings for Ondine. His disc featuring cello sonatas by Szymanowski, Kodály and Schnittke was nominated Record of the Year in 1994 by the Finnish IFPI and his recording of Prokofiev’s Sinfonia Concertante with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Sakari Oramo was hailed by the Washington for its “fury and grandeur”. Following the release of the recording Jan-Erik was personally invited by Mstislav Rostropovich to perform the work at the Cello Congress with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.
